PART

4

The Zen Path

Now you have learned about Zen tools, and have been introduced to Zen teachings that can point you toward important aspects of life to investigate. In this part I will walk you through using Zen tools to make your living more Zen. A recurring theme throughout the book so far is the problem of self-centeredness, so it’s probably not surprising that much of the work you do in Zen is aimed at curing this problem.

In this part I cover how Zen addresses the problem of self-centeredness by approaching it at different levels, all of which are important. You work on your attachment to things, because attachment refers to how you have inadvertently incorporated things and people into your self-concept, or made them a possession of self. You use Zen tools to gain a personal experience of no-self. You constantly challenge the limits of your own understanding, and if something that feels like enlightenment comes, you work extra hard not to make it just another possession of self.
